Kreayshawn is the stage name of Natassia Gail Zolot, an American rapper, music video director and internet-era breakout artist who became widely known after her 2011 viral hit Gucci Gucci. She grew up in the Bay Area, mainly between San Francisco and Oakland, in a creative environment heavily influenced by punk and DIY culture, including her mother’s involvement in a local garage punk band.
She first got into filmmaking and music very early, using a camera as a kid to record herself and local scenes, which later evolved into directing music videos for underground Bay Area artists. Before her mainstream success, she was already active in the local creative scene, mixing visual art, rap and internet aesthetics in a way that felt very ahead of its time.
Her breakout moment came almost overnight with Gucci Gucci, which pushed her from a relatively unknown underground creator into major label territory with Columbia Records. The sudden rise brought massive attention, touring, interviews and pressure from the industry, something she later spoke about as overwhelming and chaotic rather than glamorous.
She released her debut album Somethin’ ‘Bout Kreay in 2012, but it did not match the viral success of her single. After that period, her mainstream presence slowed down significantly, and she gradually moved away from the major-label spotlight.
There were also controversies around her early career era, including public online feuds with other rappers and leaked private photos during the height of her viral fame, which added to the chaotic internet energy surrounding her at the time. Over the years, she stepped back from mainstream music industry pressure and continued working more independently, occasionally reappearing through music, DJ work and online content.
Today she is often remembered as one of the early “internet virality to major label” cases in hip hop, someone who captured a very specific early 2010s Bay Area internet culture moment.
